Student Presenter: Meghan Farrell
The popularity of the “dark romance” genre has exploded in recent years, with a primarily feminine audience. However, the genre regularly depicts violence against women and sympathy towards male abusers. In this presentation, Meghan Farrell will analyze how this trend relates to modern concepts of “choice feminism” and “fandom culture”, offering an explanation as to why and how these dynamics appeal to women- as well as the dangers of thoughts on the genre leaking into real life.
