Art Appreciation Over the Centuries
Learn why people need art and how it uplifts the human spirit. From cave paintings you will realize that art is constantly evolving. The Renaissance period saw a real emphasis on realism and a shift from tempera paints to oil paints. Classicism produced art that was used intentionally to instill feelings of patriotism in the people of each nation. Impressionism encouraged painting outdoors while Cubism was all about fragmentation and multiple perspectives.
Futurists reject social organizations. Surrealism is fundamentally psychoanalytical while Abstract art steps away from Europe. Pop Art is about everything. Art is a fundamental part of what it means to be human. CE-ART 2352, 3 Thurs., June 6-20 (skip 6/19), 6:30-8:30 pm, $80. T Riley. #3036

American Impressionism
Connecticut was the birthplace of American Impressionism. The many artists who flocked to art colonies around 1900 brought
a sense of shared purpose, adapting the style of divided color and light inherited from their French precursors to new themes celebrating the welcoming and comforting local landscapes. The movement offered a simpler more stable world after the Civil War and a return to the values of the nation’s founding fathers. CE-ART 2363, 4 Mon., June 10-July 1, 12:00 noon-1:30 pm, $85. Weddings on Film: A Multinational Perspective
At a time when ideas as well as goods flow freely across national borders, the movies are a good place to look for cross-cultural connections. In this two-part series, we’ll be exploring a genre that commands popular appeal around the world: wedding films. The hero in these stories (usually a woman) holds center stage in a drama about romance, relationships, responsibility and sometimes politics. In Session One, we’ll be looking at American varieties of the genre, including The Wedding Planner (2001), Father of the Bride (1950 and 1991), Sex and the City (2008), Bridesmaids (2011), and My Big Fat Greek Wedding (2002). In Session Two, we will extend our exploration to examples from India, China, Africa, and the Middle East to understand how the marriage rituals in these lands reflect both local customs and universal ideals of matrimony. CE-FILM 2052, 2 Thurs., July 18-25, 7:00-9:00 pm $60. W Costanzo. #3021
