Alumni Perspectives
“I truly enjoyed the Analytical Reading course I took with you in Fall 2007 – I clearly remember it and College Success being two of my favorite courses that semester. I must say I still utilize some of the principles/techniques that you taught me in Analytical Reading, and for that, I am compelled to say a big THANK YOU.
In my current role as a Learning Consultant with Cengage, I work closely with a variety of professors (over 20 schools) at both 2 and 4 year schools and one of my favorite course is still College Success or Freshman Seminar as it is called at some 4 year schools. This course played an integral role in my success as a student (specifically time management skills) and I hope sometime in the near future I will be able to teach this course and help students see the value and walk away applying some of the techniques, the same way I have done.”

“I became a successful student after taking the College Success course because I learned to improve important and valuable skills. I learned about organization and time management, textbook reading, note taking and highlighting, memory techniques, reducing test taking anxiety, and test taking strategies that helps me in school and in the real world.”

“My passion for literature awakened during my time spent in English Classes as a student at Westchester Community College. Finally having the opportunity to discuss books, characters, authors, setting…with like-minded individuals, became my newfound sanctuary. The lessons learned in these classes successfully prepared me to transfer to Columbia University. Phenomenal instructors at WCC provided me with the literary foundation to be successful throughout the remainder of my undergraduate studies as a literature major, and during my time as a graduate student. I will be forever grateful for the impeccable education, and wonderful opportunities, such as the Cambridge Study Abroad Programme. Now, I share my knowledge and experiences with students in my newly assumed role as an English Professor, and I only hope to impart some of the wisdom I was gifted with while I was in the role of a student attending Westchester Community College.”

The courses and the professors in the English Department at WCC were instrumental in my success as both a student and a writer. It was an English professor who recommended me for the Honors Program, which ended up changing my life. I was able to study abroad in England through the Cambridge program. There, I fell in love with the country and returned a few years later to complete my Masters in Creative Writing at The University of Manchester. My writing and publishing career began at WCC with the support of my professors, and I have been successfully writing and publishing ever since.
