Admission to the Program
Q: What are the courses I should complete before applying to the Program?
A: If the number of applicants exceeds the number of students we are able to accept, the applicants grades in the following four courses are evaluated: Anatomy and Physiology I & II with lab, College Algebra (Math 131) or higher level on the calculus track, and English 101. Please note that Anatomy and Physiology I & II with lab must have been completed within 5 years of admission.
Q: Once I have completed A&P I & II with lab, College Algebra and English 101, is admission guaranteed?
A: Having these courses completed is strongly recommended, though it does not guarantee admission to the program. Admission to the program is highly competitive and selective.
Q: What other courses are required for the A.A.S. Degree outside of the Radiology courses?
A: A course in Humanities (ENG 102) and a course in the Diversity: Equity, Inclusion and Social Justice and Social Sciences (HSERV 200)”
Q: Do we accept transfer Rad Tech courses?
A: No, as each institution lays out their individual curricula slightly differently.
Q: Can I transfer other non-Rad Tech courses?
A: Typically, yes, however the Registrar will evaluate your credits. Preference given to WCC students with 12 credits or more.
Q: When are the applications available and where do I get one? When are they due?
A: Applications are available on the Program’s web page the first day of the Spring Semester.
Applications are due by March 15.
Q: Do I need a certain GPA?
A: 2.7 or higher. GPA is also taken into consideration when evaluating applicants for admission.
The Program
Q: How long is the program?
A: Two (2) years, which consist of four (4) semesters (Fall and Spring) plus two (2) 10-week Summer sessions. The summer sessions are clinical rotations, Monday-Friday 8-4. Students have vacation the month of August.
Q: Do we have evening or online courses?
A: Evening courses are not offered. Courses are typically not offered online.
Q: How often do students attend clinical during the year?
A: Two or three times a week during the Fall and Spring semesters, depending on the semester. The other days they are in class. There are also two 10-week Summer sessions, during which the students attend clinical five days a week.
Q: Do I get to choose where I attend clinical?
A: No, we have several clinical affiliate sites and the clinical coordinator selects your rotations based upon your competency requirements. The student will rotate through four different clinical settings during the program.
Q: Is a background check and drug screening necessary to get into the program?
A: This will be completed once you are accepted into the program, along with a physical.
Q: Is the program accredited?
A: Yes, the program is accredited with the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT).
Q: Where can program effectiveness data be found?
A: The program updates its effectiveness data on an annual basis on the SUNY Westchester Community College website (sunywcc.edu). This information is also available through the JRCERT website: www.jrcert.org.
Upon Completion of the Program
Q: Will there be a licensing exam upon graduation?
A: Yes; upon successful completion of the program, each student is eligible to sit for the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists exam. Passing is 75 or higher.
Q: Will I be licensed upon graduation?
A: Yes, each student that has met all of the requirements for program completion may apply for a temporary New York State Department of Health License which is valid for 180 days OR 10 days after notification that the individual failed to pass the qualifying examination.
Q: What degree will I earn?
A: An Associate’s degree in Applied Sciences
Q: Can I get a job without a BS?
A: Yes, as long as you are licensed and registered.
Q: How do I become an MRI or CT tech, or other modalities?
A: With experience as a technologist, you may learn in the clinical setting after graduation or take a course. A certain amount of training is required before you can sit for the registry in these exams.
Q: Can I do Ultrasound and Radiation Therapy with this education?
A: No they require a different field of study
