Opening Doors to Opportunity This year the Westchester Community College Foundation received gifts from over 1,700 individual donors who believe that a lack of financial resources should not define a person’s ability to reach their full potential through higher education. Their generosity this year made it possible for the Foundation to award $2.8 million in scholarships, support crucial special programming, and contribute to the sustained excellence of the college. Scholarships Are Life-Changing SUNY Westchester’s tuition remains among SUNY’s lowest at $5,230 per academic year, yet the annual total cost of education including textbooks, transportation, fees, and living expenses can exceed $21,000. This poses an insurmountable barrier for families with limited resources. Scholarships may be funded on an annual basis beginning at $5,000, or permanently endowed beginning at $45,000. The Fund for WCC provides the precious gift of opportunity to thousands of deserving students by supporting special programs, increasing scholarship funding, and advancing innovative programs at the college. These unrestricted gifts give the Foundation the flexibility to respond to our students’ greatest needs. Two New Endowed Scholarships Total Over $350,000 PARTNERS WITH VISIONINDIVIDUAL DONORS The Walter Hauck Memorial Scholarship memorializes the legacy of this well-loved head coach and member of SUNY WCC’s Physical Education Department for 43 years. Walter touched the lives of everyone he met, and it is fitting that a scholarship in his honor will assist athletes for years to come. This will be awarded to a high-potential student in good standing with financial need who participates in the college’s athletics programs, with preference for a member of the school’s bowling team. The Ann and John Kaufman Memorial Endowed Scholarship honors the legacy of two dedicated philanthropists and community leaders who saw firsthand the power of education to change lives. Ann served on the Foundation Board for nearly two decades and volunteered as a conversation partner with English-language learners. John was a volunteer math tutor and an Adobe Photoshop teaching assistant. Together they ensured students’ voices were heard and their needs met. In their memory, significant awards will be given to continuing students with financial need who maintain a GPA of 3.0. 31
