JobSTAR
Since 1990, JobSTAR has been providing educational training, assessment, case management, job placement assistance and other related services to individuals and families throughout Westchester County. JobSTAR is a collaboration between Westchester Community College and the Westchester County Department of Social Services.
JobSTAR currently offers the following programs:
- Adult Basic Education Refresher Skills
- GED/HSE Test Preparation in English and in Spanish
- Culinary Basics & ServSafe Certification
- Microsoft & Information Technology Solutions (M.I.T.S.)
- English as a Second Language
- Workforce Development Courses
- Westchester Community College – Associate Degree Credit Courses
- *T.A.B.E. Testing for Adult Basic Education Exam pre-requisite testing for most courses
Eligibility for enrollment in JobSTAR requires that students be:
- Residents of Westchester County.
- At least 18 years old.
- Ready to commit to enhancing their lives through education and workforce skills training.

Benefits to Students
- FREE Access to Education & Workforce Training- JobSTAR offers eligible individuals access to free, comprehensive workforce training programs taught by Westchester Community College adjunct faculty. All necessary learning materials are provided.
- Flexibility – JobSTAR programs are designed to accommodate the schedules of working parents. Most classes are offered during school hours, and weekend sessions are available for students who need flexibility to balance their education with employment or other responsibilities.
- Employment Opportunities – JobSTAR is committed to assisting you in securing and maintaining meaningful employment. We collaborate closely with Westchester Community College’s Career Services department and the Westchester Putnam Career Center Network to identify and promote relevant job opportunities. Additionally, our annual job fairs connect program completers with employers seeking qualified talent. We regularly disseminate information about upcoming job fairs and career opportunities to all past and current students.

Adult Basic Education Refresher Skills
This skill-building course is designed to bridge the gap for individuals who have not yet earned a high school diploma or GED. While not a GED preparation program, it equips students with mathematics and English language arts essentials required for pursuing a GED or other WCC courses.
High School Equivalency (HSE)-GED Test Prep Course in English and in Spanish
The program is designed to assist individuals who have not completed high school or obtained a GED in preparing for and successfully passing the High School Equivalency (HSE) examination. Prior to enrollment, students undergo a TABE assessment to determine their appropriate placement within the program.
Culinary Basics & ServSafe Certification
On the WCC Valhalla campus in a modern, well-equipped facility, the program equips students with the necessary skills, knowledge, and professional values to excel in the dynamic food industry. This includes training for various settings such as restaurants, hotels, healthcare facilities, educational institutions, and private companies. In addition to hands-on culinary experience, students work towards obtaining industry-recognized certifications, including ServSafe Food Protection Manager, Handler, and Allergens certifications, accredited by the American National Accreditation Board (ANAB)-Conference for Food Protection (CFP).

Microsoft & Information Technology Solutions (M.I.T.S.)
- M.I.T.S. is a comprehensive Information Technology module that includes Microsoft Certification and CompTIA Tech+.
- Boost your professional profile by showcasing your Microsoft-verified credentials and skills to potential employers. These industry-recognized certifications are earned through exams that assess your ability to apply knowledge to real-world workplace challenges.
- CompTIA Tech+ is a foundational certification for those entering the tech field, offering a broad range of technical knowledge and practical skills to enhance your confidence and expertise.
English as a Second Language (ESL)
The English Language Institute offers English as a Second Language (ESL) classes to meet the needs of learners entering the program at any of their eight levels, from beginner to advanced (0-7). Each student’s level is determined by the results of a required placement exam.
Workforce Development Courses
The Division of Workforce Development and Community Education is the largest such unit in the entire SUNY system. It offers courses for people of all ages considering career choices or changes or personal development; customized training for businesses; innovative programming for older adults; an exciting arts and culture series open to the public.

TABE TEST – Test of Adult Basic Education
TABE is a comprehensive academic assessment tool used to identify the educational needs of JobSTAR students. By assessing students’ skills in various academic subjects, the TABE enables us to tailor learning plans and provide appropriate support. All registering students are required to take the TABE Test.
