“Theories of Monstrosity” Lecture
Presented by the Harold L. Drimmer Library
Date: Thursday, October 24, 2024, from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m.
Location: Harold L. Drimmer Library, Atrium – SUNY Westchester Valhalla
What can the zombie apocalypse tell us about group behavior? How is Twilight’s main vampire squeeze Edward Cullen a PSA for teenage abstinence? How is Tim Burton’s Frankenweenie a useful tool for processing grief? And what everyone wants to know: Why don’t monsters like Jason, Dracula, Freddy Krueger, and Chucky just die already?!
In this ghoulish presentation, Professor Heather Ostman will look at the ways monsters, which appear in every culture, provide important insights into human behavior and help us to know ourselves better, even as they thrill and chill us. Q & A to follow presentation.
