ESL FAQ
Q: How do I register for ESL classes?
If you are ready to register for a course, you may use the Pre-Registration Form. After we receive it, we will call to help you select your course and to assist you with completing the registration and making payment. If you prefer, you can call 914-606-6656 to register.
Q: Do I need to be vaccinated for COVID-19 to attend classes?
For in-person classes, you must have proof of a completed COVID-19 vaccination, a medical exemption, or a religious exemption. For online classes, no proof is required.
Q: Do I need to purchase books?
Books are necessary for most courses and cost from about $55 (non-intensive) to about $170 (intensive). eBooks cost about $25-$35. Your teacher will assist you with book buying.
Q: How many levels of ESL instruction are offered?
Eight levels (0 – 7) of ESL instruction are offered.
Q: How do you determine my level?
Testing is required if you are new to our program or did not take the ESL final test during the past two semesters. Registration is required to take the placement test. The placement test is given online using Zoom at the first session of all programs with levels. Testing information is provided when you register.
Q: Do you offer specialized courses?
In addition to general multi-level ESL classes, the ELI offers a variety of specialized courses offering instruction in one or more skill areas. All specialized courses are designed for specific proficiency levels. New students must obtain administrative approval, which may require a test or short interview, to register for any specialized course.
Q: Which specialized courses do you offer?
We offer Accent on Fluency, Business English for Internationals, English for Academic Purposes, Pronunciation, and TOEFL Preparation Workshop.
Q: Can I study if I live outside of Westchester County?
Residents have been in New York for one year or more. Students who are not residents of Westchester County are welcome but pay a 166% non-resident surcharge in addition to the regular tuition. For non-Westchester County residents to qualify for the resident rates, an Application for Certificate of Residency form must be completed, notarized, authorized by your New York State county of residence, and then submitted to the English Language Institute. Call 914-606-6656 for information. (Note: These courses do not pay the non-resident surcharge: 3000, 1210, 1420, 1524.)
Q: I would like to begin a college program or get a certificate. Where do I begin?
If you have completed or are now completing ELI level 5 (or have an equivalent level of English proficiency) and are considering enrolling in a college/university program, call the ELI at 914-606-6656 to make an appointment with a TESOL specialist to discuss your future studies. We will help you answer the question: Am I ready for college? We will evaluate your English language ability and, if appropriate, provide a referral necessary for entrance to Westchester Community College.
Q: How can I become an F-1 International Student?
Immigration form I-20 is available to ESL students who would like to study full-time in the Intensive English Program or the TESOL Certificate Program. Please contact Justin Smith at Justin.Smith@sunywcc.edu or 914-606-7744, and he will assist you with important F-1 information and application.
