Microsoft Excel For Healthcare Informatics

Course Overview:

This course is intended to provide a broad overview and appeal to healthcare professionals and their support staff how to effectively use Microsoft Excel for analyzing clinical, administrative and financial information. All exercises and examples have been developed by healthcare professionals using real-world scenarios and were created using data from hospitals, long term care facilities, clinics, rehabilitation centers, ambulatory surgical centers and other healthcare settings.

Skill Set Acquisition:

This course will enable healthcare professionals with an interest in the field of informatics to utilize Microsoft Excel for analyzing a wide variety of data-driven issues, including but not limited to:

Tracking Length-Of-Stay (LOS) and patient acuity data within healthcare systems;
Graphing and charting the occurrence of nosocomial and community acquired infections;
Creating sophisticated reports with subtotals and totals that track clinical productivity;
Using Pivot Table functionality to collect and analyze State-mandated preoperative risk assessment data;
Improving clinical data quality while monitoring significant adverse events (SAEs);
Implement focused patient tracking systems based on diagnosis, LOS, payer or provider;
Tracking surgical implant usage and history by vendor, date, cost and location;
Quickly and easily download clinical data from third-party sources into Microsoft Excel for data analysis;
Develop clinical decision-support tools for healthcare data analysis using Microsoft Excel and Access;
Integrate Electronic Health Record (EHR) data with Microsoft Excel spreadsheets;
Integrate Clinical Charts and Graphs into Microsoft Power Point presentations;
And many other practical clinical examples, all based on best clinical and administrative practices.

Healthcare professionals with an interest in the area of data informatics will find this course to be useful. Past participants have included physicians, nurses, quality managers, infection control practitioners, healthcare risk managers and clinical documentation specialists.

Prerequisites:

Basic knowledge of Microsoft Excel is preferred. Participants should have a foundational understanding of common clinical and administrative terms (LOS, patient acuity, clinical documentation, etc.) typically used in healthcare organizations Familiarity with data entry skills is helpful although not essential for the completion of this course.
