About Westchester EOC
Who We Are
SUNY Westchester Educational Opportunity Center, located in Yonkers, NY, is part of a statewide system of educational enterprises. We are funded by the State University of New York, University Center for Academic and Workforce Development, and administered by Westchester Community College.
Our Vision
SUNY Westchester EOC provides access to quality education and serves our students and the community with passion, commitment and pride. We strive to be the best adult education institution in Westchester County and the center of influence for training and career development.
What We Do
Westchester EOC provides a comprehensive array of tuition-free developmental, educational and vocational training programs for eligible adults in a supportive environment, enabling them to obtain the skills and credentials they need to pursue higher education and/or secure career-oriented employment.
We are committed to fostering the personal growth, intellectual development and economic independence of our students while supporting the economic revitalization and well-being of the communities we serve.
Community Services are a significant part of Westchester EOC’s work. We are a resource to and expert in the County, on various workforce development issues, particularly as they relate to public policy, federal legislation and the needs of underserved populations. We provide workshops at a variety of public forums and venues.
Westchester EOC also has well-established and significant partnerships with employers, other educational institutions and training providers, community-based organizations, and state and local government agencies. These partnerships serve multiple purposes, including providing collaborative training on-site at partner agencies, testing and assessment of potential students, targeted outreach and recruitment, referral services and more. We partner with employers to provide internships and externships for our students; offer customized training; and refer trained and screened candidates for available job openings. We also host and participate in various community-engagement activities.
Whether you want to get certified as a Nurse Aide, prepare to go to college, become an Emergency Medical Technician, obtain your high school diploma or improve your English language skills, Westchester EOC has classes and caring professionals to help you along the way.
Developmental Programs
Westchester EOC’s language and foundational education programs are designed to meet students where they are and assist them in reaching their goals. Through these classes, students can progress at their own pace and realize educational gains by improving basic skills in math, reading, writing and critical thinking, or by becoming proficient in workplace or career-level English. Students who successfully complete these classes can typically enroll in vocational or more-advanced academic programs. We offer both day and evening English language and foundational education courses to accommodate working-adult schedules.
Academic Programs
Our academic programs help students to obtain the reading, writing, math and critical- thinking skills they need in order to take and pass the high school equivalency exam and/or successfully place into college-level courses upon enrollment. We offer both day and evening high school equivalency classes to accommodate working-adult schedules. Our College Prep Academy helps prepare students for the college placement exam, to minimize the number of developmental or remedial classes a student might need once they register for college. In addition, we provide college tours, workshops and guidance to help make the transition to higher education easier and more successful.
Vocational Programs
Westchester EOC’s vocational program offerings are designed to prepare students for careers in healthcare, business and the knowledge economy, with select hands-on skills. In addition to receiving occupational-skills training for specific careers, many of our vocational students also obtain industry or state certifications in their field of study. Vocational students also often acquire practical experience in a work setting before completing training, by participating in unpaid clinical rotations, internships or externships.
