Leadership & Service
What is Leadership?
Leadership is fundamentally defined by the development and support of others as they work towards becoming their best, truest, and most productive selves. It is about granting one’s community the necessary tools to intentionally support and holistically progress towards a greater and collectively agreed upon good. Furthermore, leadership entails looking within and expanding upon one’s resources to build networks that define both group and individual identities while achieving tasks effectively.
What is Service-Learning?
Service-learning is a form of experiential education where learning occurs through a cycle of action and reflection. Service-learning places an emphasis on working closely with community partners to address community concerns. Students who engage in service-learning learn about the connection between their service, their academic coursework, and their roles as citizens.
Within each of the Department of Student Involvement’s leadership and service-learning programs, students have the opportunity to…
- Develop a stronger sense of purpose and self-awareness.
- Explore and embrace their individual strengths, abilities, and fortitude.
- Clearly choose and develop into who they want to become in the world.
- Enhance communication, networking, and numerous other marketable skills.
- Expand upon their network of both on and off-campus supports and resources.
- Challenge themselves into becoming the person they envision themselves to be.
- Learn techniques towards destressing one’s mind while further connecting with others.
- Embrace individual differences and learn how to pivot them towards successful outcomes.
- Do good for our communities.
