Student Handbook 2023 - 2024

Student Support Services connects students and their families with resources to help relieve or even eliminate challenges they may be facing with housing, food insecurity, crises services, legal assistance, and unforeseen emergencies. Student Support Services sponsors a variety of on-campus support, including a food pantry. There are multiple events and support groups throughout the year to help students address the challenges they are facing. Staff will meet with students, get to know them and their life circumstances in a safe, affirming, private, and friendly environment. Testing and Assessment Center www.sunywcc.edu/testing Westchester Community College has a mandatory assessment and placement policy for all matriculated students. Placement is an important first step in your plan for success to ensure you are placed into courses that meet your academic abilities and needs. You will be assessed for placement into your English, mathematics, and readings courses. What placement assessment will I take? Your placement assessment is dependent on your admissions status at the college and if you have a high school degree or high school equivalency (GED, TASC, etc.). To determine which placement assessment you need and to learn more about it, please visit the Testing Center website at www.sunywcc.edu/testing Can you be waived from placement? Yes, you may be eligible for Placement Testing exemptions into college level courses using high school GPA, SAT, ACT, or Regent scores. For more details and scores required, please visit the Testing Center web page at https://www.sunywcc.edu/testing and select How to Waive the Placement Requirements. Who is eligible for a retest or challenge exam? To be eligible for a retest or challenge exam you may not have previously been enrolled in a course in the area being tested. Ex: A student may be permitted to retest in math prior to attempting a mathematics course. Once a student has attempted a math course, a retest or challenge is not permitted. Rules regarding retests or challenge exams depend on the type of assessment you originally took. For more information on this, please visit the Testing Center web page at https://www.sunywcc.edu/testing.
